Mt Blyznytsia

Thirty hectares of cliff on Blyznytsia have been a botanical monument of national importance since 1975, and the plant they were set aside for is edelweiss. Ukrainians call it bilotka alpiiska; Hutsuls call it shovkova kosytsia, the silk braid. It survives on these ledges for an unromantic reason — sheep cannot stand on them and most people cannot reach them. Dryas, alpine aster and Carpathian cat’s-foot hold on up there with it, all of them listed in Ukraine’s Red Data Book.

The mountain under the cliffs is the top of Svydovets. Blyznytsia means the twins, and there are two summits — 1,883 m at the northern end, 1,872 m at the southern — closing the eastern end of the massif above Yasinia. Nothing on Svydovets is higher, and nothing else on it looks like this: the rest of the range runs to broad grassy backs, while Blyznytsia keeps a rock face.

Sandstone with a seam of limestone

Blyznytsia is sandstone with layers of limestone running through it, and that seam is why the plant list here reads differently from the crests west of it. Dryas and alpine aster are lime-lovers; the limestone bands are what they have found. The two summits stand on the same crest with a saddle between them, and the Zhandarm outcrops are less than two kilometres north, which is how most people arrive.

Approach matters more than fitness. The western and southern slopes are grass and walkable; the eastern side is steep rock and is not a route. Snow sits in the hollows under that east face into May, which is worth knowing before you plan an early-season crossing in trainers.

The flowers, and why there are fewer

Picking edelweiss is not a small offence. Destroying a Red Data Book plant carries a fine of a few hundred hryvnias for a private citizen, selling them costs several thousand, and compensation is charged on top for every plant taken. It has not stopped anyone. Botanists from the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve working the Svydovets high ground in July 2025 recorded rare species falling back across the massif and put uncontrolled picking first among the causes.

If you want to see edelweiss on Blyznytsia, look up rather than around. The plants sit on ledges above the walking line, which is precisely why they are still there. Binoculars will do more for you than scrambling, and scrambling on wet sandstone is a poor idea in any case.

Getting to the top

The short way starts at Drahobrat. A circuit from the resort over Blyznytsia and Stih and back runs about 10.6 km and fits into a day without drama. Stih, next door, has a chairlift and is the easier outing by a wide margin; Blyznytsia has no lift and the high point of the massif, which is the trade you are making.

On foot the whole way, Yasinia to the summit and back is about 20 km and a full day. From Kvasy it is nearer 24 km and around ten hours, with more height gained. The full Svydovets traverse — roughly 41 km over three or four days — takes Blyznytsia in at one end or the other. The approach to Drahobrat is the awkward part either way: the last 9 km up from Yasinia is a rutted mountain road that only four-wheel drive takes, so everyone hires a local driver.

What you see, and what to carry

South and east the whole Chornohora skyline lines up, Hoverla at 2,061 m with Petros beside it and the rest of the ridge running off behind. West the massif falls away in flat green backs towards Velykyi Kotel and Troiaska. Below the northern side the Svydovets lakes sit in cirques a glacier gouged out of the slope.

The crest changes its mind quickly and the summit takes cloud early in the day, so sunrise is the argument for sleeping at Drahobrat rather than driving up at ten. Take a windproof and something warm even in July. There is no shelter of any kind between the resort and the top.

Worth stopping for on the way

Yasinia deserves an hour before you go up. The Strukivska church there — the Church of the Ascension, built in 1824, cruciform, shingled and put together without nails — joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2013 as one of the Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region.

On the road down towards Kvasy, Trufanets Falls drops beside the H-09 in a run of steps — the tallest natural waterfall in Zakarpattia, and the one sight in this valley that asks nothing of you: park on the verge and look. Rakhiv, the highest town in the country, is half an hour further on.
