Pishkonia Ridge

The red waymarks on Pishkonia stop being useful at Horb. West of it the ridge is signed and obvious; east of it you pick your own line over Syhla, Yasnovets and Darvaika, around dwarf pine and through old clear-cuts, with brambles waiting below if you drift off the descent. That split is the reason to come here rather than to a neighbouring ridge.

It runs about 25 km through the Gorgany, entirely inside Synevyr National Nature Park, from the Synevyr pass south-east and then round in an arc towards Kolochava. Strong walkers do it in a day; two or three, with a night on the tops, is the better trip.

Nehrovets, and everything either side of it

The high point is Nehrovets, 1,707 m — not the highest mountain in its own national park, which is Strymba at 1,719 m, in plain view across the valley. On a clear day the top gives you Borzhava, Strymba and pieces of Svydovets. It is the most exposed ground on the walk, and the wind is a factor in planning.

Mt Pishkonia itself, 1,475 m, is the usual first objective from the Synevyr side: an easy-angled climb through beech and spruce onto open grass, with Velyka Hropa next. The spring on the Horb traverse runs slowly, so don't plan on filling four bottles in a hurry. Beyond Barvinok, where the marked descent begins, Yasnovets is better traversed than climbed and Darvaika, about 1,502 m, is flat, open and has the best view on the ridge. Slit trenches turn up along the crest — Árpád Line remains, of the kind Kolochava's museum sets out in full.

Two lakes, and neither is the famous one

In the saddle between Horb and Nehrovets lies a small glacial lake with no official name, which walkers call Krapelka — the droplet — for an outline that only reads from above. It is shallow, with newts and diving beetles in it, and the way down is loose and steep, worse after rain. The ground above is flat enough to camp on.

Lower down, on the northern slope at roughly 1,000 m, sits Ozirtse — Dyke Ozero, the Wild Lake — in conifer forest, about 1.2 hectares and up to 10 m deep. It is turning into a raised bog from the shore and the middle at once, and the sphagnum rafts drifting on the surface are that process made visible; the largest never fully sinks and carries small trees. A trail loops the water to a viewing platform, and two shelters stand nearby. Don't pitch at the water's edge; use them.

The four ways to walk it

The standard line starts at Synevyr, from the park checkpoint by the bridge or the Forest and Rafting Museum, and runs over Pishkonia, Velyka Hropa and Nehrovets to Horb: 25–30 km, two or three days, red waymarks on the crest, blue for the first stretch from the museum, all part of the Transcarpathian Tourist Route. One thing to get right — the marked descent puts you down in the village of Horb, not Kolochava, which is several more kilometres of road on foot.

The harder version carries on past Horb over Syhla, Yasnovets and Darvaika into Kolochava: much the same distance, no marks for the second half, and navigation that punishes optimism. From Kolochava there are two ways up. Straight to Barvinok is about 9 km on red marks and a grind, all the height in one go through forest. The gentler is the green trail to Darvaika, roughly 20 km there and back over 8–12 hours and panoramic almost from the start, which makes it the one to give children. Most people stop at the hill with the big cross and call it Darvaika — the summit is a few hundred metres further, and as of 2025 there was no sign on it.

Water, shelter and season

Springs are thin on the crest, and that is the real constraint on how you cut the days. Refill on the way to Ozirtse, and below Darvaika, Syhla, Pishkonia and Barvinok; in a dry summer some drop to a trickle, so never build a plan around one marked source. A kolyba below Yasnovets sleeps about ten.

Tents go up on the crest in settled conditions — there is decent ground below Horb, below Syhla and on Darvaika's Kolochava-facing slopes — but check the forecast, because nothing up there will hide you. Late spring to early autumn is the season, and autumn is the better half: drier grass, cleaner outlines on the far ranges. If you would rather not sleep out, Kolochava and Synevyr have beds.

What else is out here

Shypun Falls is worth an hour if you are passing Synevyr village: about 4 m, dropping in steps down a mossy rock staircase on a nameless stream off Menchul. It is not Shypit, the bigger and far busier waterfall above Pylypets, and the confusion of names works in its favour. Short approach, best in spring or after rain.

The ridge slots into a longer trip without effort: Stare Selo, the narrow-gauge railway, the school museums and the Árpád Line site at the Kolochava end; Lake Synevyr, the Forest and Rafting Museum and the brown bear centre at the other. Come by car through Mizhhiria if you can — buses run, but not on a timetable that suits walkers. By rail it is Volovets, then a bus.
