St Andrew's Church

Turquoise walls, cream-white columns, one gilded dome ringed by four slender turrets — the church that crowns Andriivskyi Descent was drawn by the architect of St Petersburg’s Winter Palace, who never once came to Kyiv to watch it rise. Bartolomeo Rastrelli designed St Andrew’s from the imperial capital; raising it on a steep, waterlogged slope fell to the Moscow architect Ivan Michurin and to Kyiv’s own masons.

It was built as a court church — a private chapel for an empress who fell for the city — which is why, alone among Kyiv’s landmark churches, it carries no bells. It marks the hinge of the city, where the upper town breaks and the ground drops toward Podil; its gold domes show from the river and the bridges below.

The church Elizabeth ordered, then left behind

Empress Elizabeth came to Kyiv in 1744, was charmed, and resolved to build a residence here with a court church attached. The foundation was consecrated that September; tradition holds that she laid the first three bricks herself. Then she went home, and the building crawled.

Sources put the main construction at 1747–1762, though the dates wander — the difficult, waterlogged terrain dragged the work out, and the interior wasn’t finished until the late 1760s. Rastrelli never supervised in person; that fell to Michurin and Kyiv’s craftsmen. The church had a hard 20th century, its services halted in the 1930s and again after the war, before a careful restoration in the 1970s and 1980s — guided by Rastrelli’s original drawings in Vienna’s Albertina — brought it back close to its 18th-century form.

One central dome carries the composition; around it stand four decorative turret-buttresses with Corinthian pilasters, part ornament and part structure. St Andrew’s is one of the few Rastrelli buildings to keep not just its shape but its original Baroque interior. It’s compact — roughly 32 metres long, rising about 50 metres to the tip of the cross — and painted the turquoise-and-gold of Elizabethan Baroque, theatrical and bright.

The clever part is underneath. Because the slope is unstable and heavy with water, the church sits on a two-storey stone stylobate more than ten metres high, with service rooms inside — in effect, it stands on its own building. The exterior decoration leans on cast iron, close to a hundred tonnes of it, bold for a church here at the time. Inside, the prize is the gilded, multi-tiered iconostasis built to Rastrelli’s design, hung with thirty-nine 18th-century icons and finished with more than a thousand slabs of gold leaf — one of the few Baroque iconostases of his to survive.

Why the church has no bells

No Kyiv monument attracts more stories. The oldest reaches back to the Apostle Andrew, who by church tradition climbed these hills in the first century, planted a cross above the Dnipro and foretold a great Christian city on the spot; the church takes his name from it. The most poetic tale claims a sea once filled the valley — when Andrew raised his cross the waters drew back, but not all of them, and a remnant is said to sleep under the hill still.

From that comes the famous one. Ring a bell, the story warns, and the underground water will wake and drown Podil and the whole left bank — so the church was left silent on purpose. Historians are drier: St Andrew’s was a palace church, not a parish one, with no congregation to summon, and the troubles of earlier churches here came from the hill’s waterlogged geology, not a hidden sea. The legend has outlived the engineering, and it suits the place.

You don’t need to go inside for the best of it. The church sits on Andriivska Hill at the top of the Descent, ringed by a balustraded terrace that doubles as a viewing platform. Podil spreads out below — red roofs, old churches, narrow lanes — and beyond it the Dnipro runs wide toward the left bank.

Come at golden hour, when the low light warms the domes and the roofs of Podil and the view gains depth. Early in the morning, before the Descent fills up, it’s startlingly quiet for the middle of a city of millions.

Yes, you can go inside; it’s both a working church and a museum object, long part of the St Sophia of Kyiv national reserve. Its status has shifted lately — in October 2018 parliament granted the Ecumenical (Constantinople) Patriarchate use of it, and it reopened after a long restoration in December 2020 — so check the current arrangements before you go. Entry to the church is usually free; the museum display and guided tours may cost a little.

The nearest metro is Kontraktova Ploshcha on the green line, a 10–15 minute walk up through Podil and the Descent; you can also come from above, via Sofiivska or Mykhailivska Square. Wear proper shoes — the Descent is steep and cobbled. And leave time for it: Andriivskyi Uzviz is Kyiv’s Montmartre, a slope of galleries, studios, cafes and street musicians. Richard’s Castle looms neo-Gothic near the top, and at No. 13 sits the Bulgakov museum, the ‘House of the Turbins’ behind his novel The White Guard. Give it half a day.
